Behavior
Narwhals are generally slow moving creatures, but they can move very fast when chased by predators. They prefer to stay near the surface, but they can dive up to 5,000 feet to catch food. Narwhals do migrate, and they move closer to the shore during the Summer, and live under ice packs in the Winter. They tend to travel in pods of 10-100 or even way more. They are very vocal animals, and the communicate through various sounds like squeals, trills, and clicks. The males often cross tusks, which is called tusking. It may be a form of dueling or friendly contact or cleaning. Their mating season is from March to May, and there gestation is up to 16 months! They give birth to one calf at a time, and the females give birth every 3 years or so. The calves are normally brown with no spots.
